If your eSIM QR code is not working, the cause is almost always one of four things: you are trying to scan the code from the screen of the same phone you are installing on, the image is too small or too dark to read, your phone has no internet connection, or the code has already been used once. Each of those has a fix, and none of them requires technical knowledge.
Quick answer: work through the fixes below in order. Most eSIM QR code problems are solved in the first two steps, and anything left over can be handled with manual eSIM activation using the activation code and SM-DP+ address supplied with your plan.
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM profile downloaded onto a chip already inside your phone. The QR code (Quick Response code) is just a container for the download instructions — so when scanning fails, the profile itself is usually fine.

What the error message is telling you
Different phones word the same problem differently. Match what you see on screen to the likely cause before you start changing settings.
| What you see | Most likely cause | Where to go |
|---|---|---|
| Camera sees nothing, no prompt appears | Scanning from the same device, or a blurry/cropped image | Fixes 1 and 2 |
| "Unable to add mobile plan" / "Cannot add cellular plan" | No internet, or a temporary server error | Fix 4 |
| "This code is no longer valid" / "already been used" | Profile has already been downloaded once | Fix 5 |
| "Invalid QR code" after a clean scan | Wrong scanner used, or a genuinely damaged image | Fixes 3 and 2 |
| No "Add eSIM" option exists in Settings | Device does not support eSIM, or is carrier-locked | Fix 7 |
Fix 1: You cannot scan a code shown on the same phone
Symptom: you open the camera in your eSIM settings and nothing happens, because the QR code is sitting in an email or a screenshot on that very phone.
Cause: the phone needs to point its camera at the code. It cannot photograph its own screen.
Action: display the QR code somewhere else — a laptop, a tablet, a printout, or a partner’s phone — then scan it. Open the confirmation email on a computer and scan from that screen. If you have no second screen available, skip straight to Fix 6 and enter the details by hand; the result is identical.
Fix 2: The code image is unreadable
Symptom: the camera focuses on the code but the phone never recognises it.
Cause: QR codes need contrast, sharpness and margins. A screenshot cropped too tightly, a photo taken at an angle, a dimmed screen or a dark-mode email can all break the scan.
Action:
- Open the original email or PDF rather than a forwarded screenshot.
- Turn the displaying screen’s brightness to maximum and switch off any dark or night mode.
- Zoom so the code fills roughly a third of the screen, leaving white space around all four edges.
- Hold the scanning phone 15–25 cm away, square on, and wait two seconds for focus.
- Wipe the camera lens — a smudged lens defeats more scans than people expect.
If the code is on paper, avoid glossy lighting and glare. A slightly angled printout under a lamp often scans when a flat one does not.
Fix 3: You are scanning in the wrong app
Symptom: the camera app recognises the code and offers to open a web link, or does nothing useful at all.
Cause: an eSIM profile must be installed through your phone’s mobile settings, not a generic QR reader.
Action: use the correct path for your device. Menu names shift slightly between versions, so look for the nearest match.
- iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service (or Cellular) → Add eSIM → Use QR Code.
- Google Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → tap the + or "Add eSIM" → Download a SIM instead?
- Samsung Galaxy: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM → Scan QR code from service provider.
If you are unsure where these live on your model, our step-by-step eSIM installation walkthrough covers each platform in order.
Fix 4: Your phone has no working internet connection
Symptom: the code scans, then you get "Unable to add mobile plan", "Could not complete download" or a spinner that never finishes.
Cause: scanning the code only tells your phone where to fetch the profile. The download itself needs an active internet connection — and if you are installing abroad with roaming off, you may have none.
Action:
- Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network. Hotel and airport Wi-Fi with a captive login page often blocks the download; a home or café network is more reliable.
- Turn Aeroplane Mode on for ten seconds, then off, and try again.
- Switch off any VPN (Virtual Private Network) or private relay feature.
- Restart the phone and retry once. A stalled download frequently clears after a reboot.
Install your eSIM while you are still on trusted Wi-Fi at home, a day or two before departure. The profile sits dormant until you switch it on, and you avoid troubleshooting a download over airport Wi-Fi with a boarding gate closing.

Fix 5: The eSIM QR already used error
Symptom: the phone reports that the code is invalid, expired, or has already been activated.
Cause: an eSIM QR code is single-use by design. Once the profile has been downloaded to a device, the code is spent — even if you later deleted the profile, and even if the download appeared to fail halfway through.
Action:
- Check whether the profile is already installed. On iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service, and look for a second plan listed under your primary line. On Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs. If it is there, you do not need the code at all — just enable the line and switch on data roaming for it.
- If you deleted the profile by mistake, stop trying the same code. Contact your provider’s support and ask for a reissued eSIM activation code. Most providers can regenerate one, though some charge for reinstallation.
- If you installed it on a different phone earlier — an old handset, a partner’s device — remove it there first, then request the new code.
The practical lesson: never delete an eSIM profile to "start fresh". Deleting is permanent and takes the code with it. If a plan is misbehaving after installation, work through connection problems after an eSIM is installed before removing anything.
Fix 6: Manual eSIM activation, step by step
Symptom: everything above has failed, or you simply have no second screen to scan from.
Cause: none — this is a fully supported alternative, not a workaround. The QR code contains exactly this information in machine-readable form.
Your confirmation email should list an SM-DP+ address (a server address, something like rsp.example-provider.com) and an activation code (a long string of letters and numbers). Some plans also include a short confirmation code.
On iPhone:
- Settings → Mobile Service → Add eSIM.
- Tap Use QR Code, then Enter Details Manually at the bottom.
- Paste the SM-DP+ address and the activation code exactly as supplied.
- Tap Next and wait for the profile to download.
On Android (Pixel and most others):
- Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add eSIM.
- Tap Download a SIM instead? then Need help? → Enter it manually.
- Enter the activation code string, which may begin with
LPA:1$. - Confirm and wait.
Copy and paste rather than typing. A single mistaken character — a capital I read as a lowercase l, or a trailing space — will fail silently and look like a broken code.
Fix 7: When the phone, not the code, is the problem
Symptom: there is no "Add eSIM" option anywhere in Settings, or the option is greyed out.
Cause: either your handset does not support eSIM, it is locked to a carrier, or a work-managed device profile blocks new mobile plans.
Action: confirm your exact model supports eSIM — most flagship phones from 2018 onward do, but regional variants differ, and some models sold in mainland China ship without eSIM hardware. Check the device compatibility list or your manufacturer’s documentation on Apple’s official support site. The GSMA, the industry body behind the standard, also maintains background material at gsma.com.
If the handset is carrier-locked, ask your home network to unlock it — they are usually obliged to once a contract or device payment is complete. On a company phone, your IT administrator may need to permit additional mobile plans; our notes on connectivity for business travellers cover the usual restrictions.

FAQ: eSIM QR code problems
Can I use the same eSIM QR code on two phones?
No. Each code downloads one profile to one device and is then spent. If you need data on a second phone, you need a second plan — there is no way to duplicate a profile across handsets.
What do I do if I deleted my eSIM by accident?
Contact your provider and ask whether they can reissue the profile. Many can, though policies and any reinstallation fee vary. Do not keep retrying the original code — it will keep returning the "eSIM QR already used" error.
Does manual eSIM activation work as well as scanning?
Yes. The QR code is only a delivery method for the SM-DP+ address and activation code, so entering them by hand produces an identical profile. It is often faster if you have the email open on the same phone.
Why did my QR code scan but the download fail?
Almost always a connectivity issue. Captive-portal Wi-Fi, an active VPN or a weak signal will interrupt the download. Reconnect to a reliable network, restart the phone and try again — the code usually remains valid if nothing was installed.
Should I install my eSIM before or after I land?
Before, on Wi-Fi you trust. The profile stays inactive until you enable it, and installing early means any problem is solved at home rather than in an arrivals hall. Background on how profiles behave is in our explainer on what an eSIM is and how it works.
If you still need a plan for an upcoming trip, Atlas eSIM sends both a QR code and manual activation details with every purchase, so you can install whichever way suits your phone.
