What Is an eSIM? How It Works for International Travel

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a small chip built into your phone that does the same job as a plastic SIM card, except you download the plan onto it instead of inserting anything. So when you ask what is an eSIM, the short answer is: it’s a SIM card that arrives as software rather than a piece of plastic in an envelope.

For travel, that difference matters enormously. You can buy a data plan for Japan while sitting at your kitchen table in Manchester, install it in about three minutes, and have working mobile data the moment you switch off aeroplane mode at Narita. No queueing at an airport kiosk, no paperclip, no losing your home SIM in a hotel drawer.

What is an eSIM, exactly?

Every mobile phone needs a SIM to connect to a network. The SIM’s job is to prove to the network who you are and what you’ve paid for. Traditionally that identity lived on a removable card — first credit-card sized, then mini, micro and finally the nano-SIM most phones used until recently.

An eSIM moves that identity onto a chip soldered permanently to your phone’s motherboard. The chip is reprogrammable, which is the crucial part. Instead of swapping hardware to change networks, you download a new profile onto the chip.

A profile is the digital equivalent of the card itself: it contains your phone number or data allowance, the network it belongs to, and the credentials that let you connect. One embedded SIM chip can store several profiles at once — typically five to ten depending on the device — though usually only one or two can be active simultaneously.

The technical name you’ll sometimes see is eUICC, or embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card. You don’t need to remember that. What you need to remember is that the chip is permanent and the plan on it is not.

How does an eSIM work when you travel?

Here’s the sequence, from purchase to working data.

  1. You buy a plan online. You choose a destination, a data amount and a duration — say 10 GB across Europe for 15 days.
  2. You receive an activation code. This usually arrives by email as a QR code (Quick Response code, the square barcode you scan with your camera) or as a manual activation string you can copy and paste.
  3. You install the profile. In your phone’s settings you add a mobile plan, scan the code, and the phone downloads the profile from a secure server. This takes seconds on a decent Wi-Fi connection.
  4. You label and configure it. Give the new line a name like "Spain trip", then decide which line handles calls, texts and data.
  5. You land and switch it on. Turn the travel eSIM on for data, turn data roaming on for that line, and leave your home line switched off for data. Your phone connects to a local partner network.

The last step is where people get confused, so it’s worth being precise. When you enable data roaming on your travel eSIM, you are not roaming in the expensive sense. You’re using a profile that was designed to connect to local networks in that country — the roaming toggle simply tells your phone it’s allowed to attach to a network other than the profile’s technical home. Your own operator’s roaming charges have nothing to do with it, because your own operator isn’t involved.

Most travel eSIM profiles connect to several networks in a country rather than just one. If the strongest signal in a rural Portuguese valley belongs to a different operator than the one you had in Lisbon, your phone can switch. That redundancy is one of the quieter advantages of buying a travel plan rather than a single local SIM.

eSIM vs physical SIM: what actually changes

Both technologies use the same underlying networks and deliver the same 4G and 5G speeds. The difference is entirely in how you obtain, install and manage the plan.

Keeping your home number

This is the reason most travellers switch. With a physical travel SIM in a single-slot phone, your home number goes dark the moment you swap cards — no bank verification codes, no WhatsApp calls from family on your usual number, no texts from your airline.

With an eSIM, your home line stays installed and registered. You leave its data switched off so it can’t quietly rack up roaming charges, but it can still receive SMS and calls. Two-factor authentication codes keep arriving. That single benefit is worth more to most people than the convenience of instant delivery.

The older-phone limitation

An eSIM is only useful if your phone has the chip. Most flagship phones from 2018 onward support eSIM, and support in mid-range devices became common from roughly 2021. But there are real exceptions — some regional variants, particularly phones sold in mainland China, ship with the feature disabled, and plenty of budget models still omit it.

You should always check your specific model rather than assuming. On an iPhone, look for "Add eSIM" or "Add Mobile Plan" under Settings then Mobile Service. You also need your phone to be carrier-unlocked. A handset still tied to a contract with a specific operator may refuse to accept another network’s profile, even a digital one.

Is an eSIM safe and secure?

Yes, and in a couple of ways it’s more secure than plastic.

Profiles are downloaded over an encrypted connection and stored in a protected area of the chip that apps cannot read. The credentials never leave that secure element, which is the same principle that protects the contactless payment chip in your phone.

Because there’s nothing to remove, an eSIM can’t be physically stolen or cloned out of your handset. A thief who takes your phone can’t pop the SIM into another device to intercept your text messages, which is a genuine attack pattern with removable cards.

The one thing to be careful about is where you buy. An activation code is a bearer credential — anyone who scans it first gets the plan. Buy from an established provider, don’t share screenshots of your QR code, and if a code appears to have already been used, contact support rather than trying it repeatedly.

What an eSIM does not do

Being clear about the limits saves disappointment.

A travel data eSIM is usually data-only. You typically don’t get a local phone number for voice calls or SMS. In practice this rarely matters, because WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal and Telegram all run over data — but if you need to receive a text from a local restaurant or a taxi firm, you’ll want to know in advance.

It doesn’t create coverage where none exists. If a region has patchy service, an eSIM won’t fix that. It also doesn’t override hardware limits: a phone that can’t reach 5G bands in your destination country won’t suddenly manage it.

And it doesn’t survive a factory reset or an unprepared phone swap. Profiles are tied to the chip, not your account, so treat a new handset as a fresh install. Keep your purchase email; most providers can reissue or transfer a profile if you ask before you wipe the old device.

Can I use an eSIM and a physical SIM at the same time?

Yes, on most modern phones. This is called Dual SIM Dual Standby, and it lets your home physical SIM handle calls and texts while your travel eSIM handles data. Some recent iPhones have no card slot at all and instead run two eSIM profiles side by side.

Do I need to be online to install an eSIM?
